Workshop Descriptions (For Beginning Digital Photographers)
- 1. Mastering Your Digital SLR Camera. Understanding your equipment is key to becoming a creative photographer. This workshop helps you gain mastery over your digital camera and lens system, including special features, dials, and menus. With your camera in hand, you will learn: a) how to set-up your camera like the pros, including file format and color space; b) how to choose a shooting mode for different situations, such as action, portraits, or landscapes; c) how to improve focus and exposure; and d) how to work with the histogram, white balance, and depth-of-field.
2. Mastering Exposure and Focus. This hands-on workshop provides a detailed understanding of how the pros get sharp images and great exposure. You will learn how the Exposure Triangle--ISO, aperture, and shutter speed--will help you become a more creative photographer. You will learn: a) how to control depth-of-field; b) how to freeze or blur action; c) how and when to use fill-flash; d) how to get tack sharp images; e) how to evaluate exposure through the histogram; and f) how to get good exposure in difficult lighting conditions, by using exposure compensation, bracketing, and HDR (high dynamic range imaging).
3. Creative Composition. Arranging the elements within a photograph is both an art and a craft. This workshop not only introduces you to the ten most common "rules" of composition but also helps you understand the principles of design so that you can build your images more creatively. You will learn the basics of composition, including leading lines, frame dynamics, rule of thirds, perspective, and simplicity. You will also learn the basics of design, including balance, tension, visual weight, and color. Sample images will be drawn from landscape, portrait, and action photography. Time permitting, you will have the opportunity to practice what you have learned at the conclusion of the workshop.
4. Photoshop Elements--The Basics. This workshop is designed for digital photographers who have little experience in organizing or editing their digital images in a software program. Using Photoshop Elements 9 as the teaching platform, the workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to the main features in Elements, including how to import, organize, view, find, edit, and print images. Participants will become familiar with the various menus, tools, and palettes in Elements, and they will learn about the three basic editing modes that are designed especially for new users.
5. Photoshop Elements--Beyond the Basics I. This workshop provides an overview of the Full Editor in Photoshop Elements 9, showing you how to adjust, enhance, and optimize your images. The workshop begins with a tour of the Full Editor workspace, including tools, menus, and palettes. Then the instructor demonstrates a Seven Step Workflow that you can use to edit your Raw or JPEG images creatively. Finally, the instructor shows you how to make Selections, make local adjustments, add elements, and remove distractions.
6. Photoshop Elements--Beyond the Basics II. This workshop focuses primarily on how to work with Layers, Masks, and Blending Modes, the foundation for editing your images creatively. Then the instructor demonstrates numerous techniques that will help you optimize your images and speed-up your workflow. In the process, you will learn how to make global and local adjustments, how to use Masks to fine-tune your images, how to change backgrounds, and how to make digital mats, posters, and vignettes.
